BMW has resharpened its 4 Series cars visually and technically. Modified styling, a newly tuned chassis and an LED light system are the most important innovations.

BMW will be showing the revised models of its 4 Series at the Geneva Motor Show. BMW reached into its own parts bin and orientated itself, among other things, on its 2012 Concept 4 Series Coupé. Thus, such elements as the hexagonal full LED headlights and the large air intake with its distinct grille slats are reflected in the new models. “Preserving the best and further refining its character was the motto for the BMW 4 Series model update. That’s why its exterior design emphasises the dynamic and elegant qualities of the BMW 4 Series family,” says Domagoj Dukec, Head of Exterior Design BMW Automobiles.

The front of the new models boasts a modified design. BMW wants to create a wide, sporty, low-slung and contoured three-dimensional front end through the interplay of contours and generous surfaces. One continuous, central air intake, which gradually increases in size, characterises the front of the new BMW 4 Series. Analogous to the front, the rear of the 4 Series likewise boasts a sporty, long-slung design. Its prominent horizontal lines and extended tail lights are meant to emphasise the wheel arches.

New LED technology

Typical of BMW, twin headlights characterise the front. LED technology replaces the previously used xenon light. The Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé are now equipped with new Bi-LED headlights as standard. LED fog lights are now standard equipment as well. The Adaptive Full LED headlights are available as optional equipment in all BMW 4 Series models. According to BMW, their striking lighting graphics are meant to underscore the dynamic and technical impression of the front.

A stiffer chassis and more refined steering

The new BMW 4 Series Coupé and the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé both have a stiffer chassis with advanced damper technology and a more refined steering adjustment. As a result of these measures, both the transverse and the longitudinal dynamic properties could be improved for all load-dependent conditions. According to the manufacturer, this is reflected in reduced pitching and rolling movements, more neutral handling at the cornering limit, an even greater straight-line stability and high steering precision typical of BMW.

All petrol and four-cylinder diesel engines of the new BMW 4 Series come from the current BMW EfficientDynamics engine family and have the BMW TwinPower turbo technology. You can choose from a total of 31 model and powertrain variants. The petrol engines are available in the three power stages: the 420i with 135 kW, the 430i with 185 kW and, as top motorisation, the 440i with 240 kW. The largest engine accelerates the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. The two smaller engines do the same in just 7.6 or 5.8 seconds, respectively. Depending on the engine, the overall fuel consumption is between 7.9 and 5.5 l/100 km. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is also available as a 418d diesel version. Its four-cylinder in-line engine delivers a maximum power output of 110 kW. Depending on the model, either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed Steptronic transmission is available for the BMW 4 Series Coupé, BMW 4 Series Convertible and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.
