Abstract

The chapter addresses the growing concern of pharmaceutically active compounds (PACs) in the environment and their impact on human and aquatic health. It highlights the increasing consumption of antibacterial drugs and their persistence in water bodies, leading to long-term negative effects. The study focuses on lincomycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, and its presence in water samples from Canada’s Grand River. The chapter introduces biochar, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly material for PAC removal, and specifically explores the use of ZnCl2-modified biochar derived from activated sludge biomass. The biochar’s physicochemical properties are enhanced through microwave pyrolysis, resulting in a porous structure and increased surface area. The adsorption of lincomycin onto the modified biochar is analyzed using various isotherm and kinetic models, revealing a complex adsorption process influenced by temperature and co-existing ions. The study provides a theoretical basis for the application of activated sludge biomass in the production of value-added sorption materials, contributing to improved antibiotic removal efficiency in wastewater treatment plants.
