Abstract

This chapter explores the critical role of non-destructive testing (NDT) in assessing the technical parameters and detecting damage in concrete structures. It highlights the importance of rapid and accurate evaluations to determine the causes and significance of structural damage, emphasizing the use of various diagnostic techniques applied directly on-site. The CAPO-Test, a post-installed 'pull-out' method, is presented as a reliable and efficient alternative to traditional core testing for evaluating in-place concrete compressive strength. The chapter delves into the principles and reliability of the CAPO-Test, supported by experimental data from concrete bridges, demonstrating its accuracy and practical advantages. Additionally, the chapter examines the evaluation of carbonation processes using the Rainbow-Test, which provides a more reliable assessment of pH values and carbonation profiles compared to traditional phenolphthalein tests. The discussion includes real-world examples and potential pitfalls in carbonation depth measurements, underscoring the need for thorough and multi-location testing to ensure accurate assessments.
