Abstract

The chapter delves into the urgent need for the maritime industry to decarbonize by 2050 and the role of Lean practices in achieving this goal. It presents a systematic literature review of Lean implementations in ports, supply chains, logistics, and shipping operations, identifying common tools such as DMAIC and VSM. The study reveals that increased efficiency, cost reduction, and productivity are the primary motivations for Lean adoption, while barriers include lack of knowledge and management involvement. Notably, the chapter underscores the need for further research on quantifying benefits and integrating new practices like agile and green methods in the maritime sector.
