Abstract

This chapter delves into the escalating threat of wildfires in Canada, with a particular focus on their disproportionate impact on First Nations communities. It explores the unique challenges these communities face, including cultural ties to the land, socio-economic conditions, and limited access to emergency management resources. The chapter also examines existing guidelines and resources for enhancing wildfire resilience, such as the National Guide for Wildland-Urban Interface Fires and FireSmart Canada. It highlights the need for tailored solutions that consider the unique needs and circumstances of First Nations communities. The chapter also discusses the importance of interdisciplinary research and community partnership in developing effective wildfire resilience strategies. It concludes with recommendations for enhancing housing resilience in First Nations communities, including the use of locally available resources and the consideration of traditional knowledge and cultural practices.
