Abstract

This chapter delves into the pressing challenges faced by rivers in tropical regions, particularly the degradation of water quality, habitat loss, and biodiversity decline due to rapid population growth and intensive land use changes. It underscores the pivotal role of riparian zones in maintaining river health, acting as protective buffers that filter pollutants, stabilize banks, and support biodiversity. The study employs the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from high-resolution PlanetScope satellite imagery to assess the health of riparian vegetation in the Merawu Watershed, Central Java Province, Indonesia. By integrating NDVI analysis with the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP), the chapter provides a comprehensive framework for prioritizing areas in need of rehabilitation. This approach incorporates expert knowledge and addresses uncertainties, ensuring a reliable and nuanced prioritization of monitoring efforts. The results are validated using the Riparian Quality Index (RQI), confirming the accuracy and robustness of the methodology. The findings highlight the critical need for targeted interventions to protect and restore riparian ecosystems, offering valuable insights for stakeholders and decision-makers involved in river basin management. The chapter concludes with recommendations for enhancing data integration, streamlining methodologies, and conducting concurrent ground-truthing to improve the accuracy and applicability of river health monitoring strategies.
