Abstract

The article addresses the challenges in power system protective relaying, focusing on the adaptation to network structures for reliable operation. Conventional distance relays, while effective, struggle with high resistance faults due to inaccurate impedance calculations. The proposed solution involves an ANN-based adaptive relay with three units for fault detection, classification, and location. The ANN is trained with features extracted using DFT from voltage and current signals, ensuring adaptability to unforeseen fault scenarios. The method dynamically updates its characteristics based on estimated fault resistance, providing robust and efficient fault diagnosis. Validation on the OPAL-RT real-time digital simulator demonstrates the superiority of this approach over conventional methods, making it a promising solution for high resistance fault management.
