Abstract

The article explores the challenges of geological formation property characterization due to heterogeneity and uncertainties. It introduces the ensemble smoother (ES) method for data assimilation, highlighting its advantages over the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) in handling nonlinear problems. The core innovation is the sorted ensemble smoother, which enhances initial samples by sorting variances and assigning dominant components, thereby improving accuracy in parameter estimation. Numerical examples, ranging from simple 1D models to complex 2D multiphase flow problems, demonstrate the superior performance of the sorted ES in reducing root mean square errors. The study concludes by emphasizing the potential of the sorting process in enhancing ES estimation, particularly in time-lapse data scenarios, and suggests its applicability to other ensemble-based methods.
