Abstract

The chapter delves into the complex interplay between global environmental issues and local cultural practices, using Gideon Mendel's 'Drowning World' and Vibha Galhotra's 'Manthan' as case studies. It argues that artists play a crucial role in highlighting environmental concerns while navigating the intricacies of local cultures and social norms. The analysis is grounded in theories of agential realism and new materialism, suggesting that matter and discourse are entangled in shaping our understanding of the environment. The chapter also explores the paradoxical status of sacred rivers like the Yamuna, which are revered yet heavily polluted. It concludes by emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that integrates religious, environmental, and political dimensions to address such crises effectively.
