Abstract

Understanding the complexities and dynamics of family business groups starts with recognizing that intentions and actions of members of the business are at the same time actions and intentions of members of a family. This chapter contributes to portfolio entrepreneurship research, by showing that business groups can be the outcome of an emerging strategy that is aligned to family members’ identities as well as the context in which they operate in. Implementing identity theory into the study of portfolio entrepreneurship allows considering family business dynamics and provides new insights, by detailing how and why identity drives portfolio development in the family farming context.
