Abstract

The article addresses the critical challenge of distinguishing power swings from symmetrical faults in power systems, particularly those with series compensation. It introduces an envelope-based method that utilizes local maxima values of DC offset current, fifth harmonic voltage, and other parameters to accurately detect fault instances and clearances. The method is tested across various compensation cases and power system scenarios, demonstrating superior performance compared to existing techniques. The proposed method shows promise in enhancing the reliability and efficiency of power system operations by effectively separating power swings from faults, even in complex, compensated systems.
