Abstract

This chapter delves into the complex interplay between environmental sustainability, legal frameworks, and the livelihoods of pottery artisans in India. It highlights the environmental impact of traditional pottery practices, such as the use of conventional kilns and the extraction of raw materials, which contribute to air pollution and habitat destruction. The chapter also explores the legal challenges faced by artisans, including regulatory hurdles and the financial burden of compliance with environmental laws. Furthermore, it discusses the economic pressures on pottery artisans, including the impact of globalization and the influx of mass-produced goods. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations aimed at supporting the livelihoods of pottery artisans while promoting environmental sustainability. By integrating these factors, the chapter argues for a holistic approach that encompasses environmental sustainability, supportive legal frameworks, and economic empowerment to improve the lives of pottery artisans and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
The chapters in this book are presented in the “International Conference on Legal and Economic Synergy for an Equitable Society, organised by the University Institute of Laws at Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana, India on February 1st, 2024”.
