Abstract

This chapter delves into the profound environmental repercussions of violent extremism, with a specific focus on the actions of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). It explores how ISIS's control over territories in Iraq and Syria has led to significant environmental degradation, including the destruction of ancient cities, cultural heritage, and natural habitats. The text also examines the organization's exploitation of natural resources for financial gain, such as oil and gas extraction, and the deliberate destruction of agricultural fields. Furthermore, it highlights the long-term environmental impacts, such as biodiversity loss, soil and water pollution, and the disruption of ecosystems. The chapter concludes by discussing the need for international cooperation to address these environmental challenges and the importance of integrating environmental considerations into post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
