Environmental impact of mezcal production: assessing bagasse valorization and vinasse treatment for a circular economy approach

The article delves into the environmental implications of mezcal production, focusing on the significant waste generated, particularly bagasse and vinasse. It presents a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two scenarios: one involving traditional mezcal production and pine chipboard manufacturing, and another incorporating waste valorization strategies. The study reveals that valorizing mezcal bagasse for board production and treating vinasse for irrigation and biofertilizer significantly reduces environmental impacts, including global warming, eutrophication, and land use.
