Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical framework of environmental justice, emphasizing its focus on marginalized communities, particularly Indigenous peoples, who bear the brunt of environmental degradation. It explores the historical origins of the environmental justice movement, tracing back to the 1960s and 1970s, and highlights pivotal events such as the Warren County protests and the landmark report 'Toxic Wastes and Race in the United States.' The chapter also examines key concepts like environmental racism, disproportionate impacts, sustainable development, health equity, empowerment and participation, and intersectionality. Furthermore, it discusses the growing threat of climate change and the concept of a 'just transition' to a green economy. The text also explores the unique perspectives of Indigenous peoples, emphasizing their deep spiritual and cultural connections to the land, and how these perspectives challenge Western, capitalist-driven patterns of resource exploitation. The chapter concludes with a look at contemporary struggles and resistance movements led by Indigenous communities, highlighting their role in advocating for environmental justice and sustainable futures.
