Abstract

This chapter delves into the environmentally friendly extraction of lithium from underclay coal waste, a byproduct of coal processing. The study investigates the use of water and organic acids like citric, oxalic, and DL-malic acid for leaching lithium from mechanically activated underclay. The research highlights the low efficiency of water leaching due to lithium's incorporation within the silicate matrix of the clay. In contrast, organic acid leaching shows promising results, with DL-malic and oxalic acids achieving nearly complete lithium extraction. The study also explores the impact of mechanical activation and acid-baking pretreatment on the leaching process. The findings suggest that organic acids, particularly DL-malic and oxalic acids, offer a sustainable and effective alternative for lithium recovery from underclay coal waste. Further experiments are planned to optimize the process and assess its environmental and economic benefits.
