Abstract

The article introduces a novel, environmentally-benign water-based coating for cotton fabric using polyethylenimine and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride. The coating is formed via a Mannich reaction and significantly enhances the fabric's flame retardancy. Through various tests, including vertical flame testing and microscale combustion calorimetry, the treated cotton shows self-extinguishing behavior and reduced peak heat release. The coating also inhibits the release of flammable volatiles during pyrolysis, contributing to a protective char layer. This innovative method offers a promising alternative to traditional, toxic flame retardants.
