Abstract

This chapter delves into the fundamental role of enzymes in cellular metabolism and their potential as targets for disease control. It explores the structure and function of enzymes, their catalytic mechanisms, and the various types of enzymatic inhibition, including reversible and irreversible inhibitors. The text also discusses the critical role of enzymes in pathogen survival and virulence, highlighting specific examples such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and hyaluronidase. Additionally, it covers the use of enzymes as targets for virulence inhibition in bacterial pathogens and the development of anti-virulence therapies. The chapter also examines the role of human enzymes in disease control, focusing on pharmacological interventions and the development of enzyme inhibitors for treating various diseases. Furthermore, it discusses computational approaches for in silico evaluation and selection of inhibitors, including virtual screening, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics. The chapter concludes with the experimental validation of inhibitor activity and the integration of technologies as a key to new-age therapies, emphasizing the potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning in accelerating drug discovery and development.
