Abstract

The chapter 'Erosion and Accretion Along the Coastal Zone of Nigeria' delves into the intricate geomorphological processes that shape the coastal zone of Nigeria. It begins by defining the term 'land' in the context of its resource value, encompassing a wide range of materials such as soil, rock, minerals, and vegetation. The coastal zone of Nigeria, spanning over 45,000 square kilometers, is subject to various dynamic processes influenced by climate change and human activities. The chapter discusses the causes of shoreline erosion, including sea-level rise and the dynamic equilibrium of coastal materials. It highlights the significant challenges posed by coastal erosion, such as the loss of land and freshwater resources, and the impact on local populations. The text also explores the contrasting phenomenon of coastal accretion, where materials are deposited on the shore, creating features like sand bars and recurved sand spits. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for managing coastal erosion, emphasizing the need for monitoring sea-level changes and implementing sustainable development strategies.
