Abstract

This chapter addresses the critical issue of traffic safety at signalized intersections in India, where heterogeneous and disordered traffic conditions present unique challenges. By leveraging real-world trajectory data from five major cities, the study provides an in-depth analysis of vehicle interactions that lead to conflicts. The research modifies conventional traffic conflict techniques, such as Modified Time to Collision (MTTC) and Deceleration Rate to Avoid Crash (DRAC), to better suit the disordered nature of Indian traffic. This adaptation allows for a more accurate estimation of rear-end and side-swipe conflicts, which are prevalent in such environments. The study also introduces a conflict severity index, which helps in identifying high-risk interactions and understanding their temporal distribution within the signal cycle. The findings underscore the importance of considering vehicle type and driver behavior in traffic safety analysis, offering valuable insights for enhancing road safety measures in developing economies.
