Abstract

Groundwater, a vital resource for ecosystems and human societies, requires accurate estimation for sustainable management. Traditional methods, relying on manual field observations and monitoring wells, face challenges in expenditure, data quality, and spatial-temporal coverage. Machine learning techniques offer promising solutions, enhancing prediction accuracy and real-time monitoring capabilities. This chapter reviews the application of various machine learning models in groundwater level estimation, their advantages over traditional methods, and challenges in data availability and model interpretability. It also discusses future research directions and the potential for integrating machine learning with traditional approaches for more effective water resource management.
