Abstract

This chapter explores the estimation of runoff using the Soil Conservation Services and Curve Number (SCS–CN) method, enhanced by remote sensing and GIS techniques. The study focuses on the Hemavathi command area in Karnataka, India, particularly the Nagamangala taluk, and its watersheds. Key topics include the methodology for runoff estimation, the analysis of land use/land cover and soil maps, and the evaluation of runoff under different antecedent moisture conditions (AMC I, II, and III). The study also examines the impact of rainfall intensity, duration, and distribution on runoff, as well as the influence of soil type, vegetation cover, slope, and catchment type. The results highlight the variability in runoff potential across different regions and the effectiveness of the SCS–CN method in watershed management. The chapter concludes with insights into the optimization of irrigation management and the planning of river basins, making it a valuable resource for professionals in water management and environmental science.
