Abstract

This study delves into the critical role of roadside friction in urban traffic operations, focusing on four-lane roads. It identifies various friction sources, such as pedestrian movement, on-street parking, bus stops, and access roads, and their significant impact on traffic speed and capacity. The research introduces the Side Friction Score (SFS), a unified metric that quantifies the combined influence of these friction elements. Through extensive data collection and analysis, the study determines the relative importance of each friction variable and develops a methodology to calculate the SFS. The findings reveal that side friction has a more pronounced effect on speed reduction at medium and high traffic levels. The study concludes that the SFS can serve as a valuable tool for urban traffic management, aiding in the assessment and mitigation of congestion and safety risks associated with roadside elements. Additionally, the research highlights the need for further studies to expand this analysis to other road types and friction categories.
