Abstract

The chapter delves into the estimation of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cohesive soils in Mysore, South India, employing the Mohr–Coulomb failure theory. It begins with an introduction to the qualitative analysis of soil and rock strength through the UCS test and the various testing methods available. The geology of the study area, including the ancient supracrustal rocks and their deformation cycles, is extensively discussed. The soil types in the region, such as sandy loam, red sandy loam, and red loam, are described, along with their depth variations. The research methodology involves collecting soil samples and performing the UCS test to determine cohesion and internal friction angle. The results, classified into four types based on previous experimental results, reveal that the soil exhibits medium to hard cohesive properties, making it suitable for the construction of multistoried structures. The chapter concludes by highlighting the significance of the UCS test in determining the stress–strain relationship, factor of safety, and internal friction angle for various soil types.
