Abstract

The chapter evaluates adaptation strategies to coastal multihazards in the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, India, using a composite adaptation index. It focuses on household-level analysis to understand the vulnerability and resilience of the communities to climate change-induced disasters. The study area, the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, is a dynamic and vulnerable region prone to cyclones, floods, salinity intrusion, and erosion. The chapter discusses the methodology used to assess adaptation capacity and strategies, including a comprehensive survey of 570 households. It analyzes adaptation strategies for extreme weather events such as cyclones, floods, salinity intrusions, and riverbank erosion, as well as changes in economic activities like agriculture and fish/shrimp farming. The study also examines coping mechanisms adopted by households during disasters. The results are presented using principal component analysis to develop a composite adaptation index, highlighting the varying degrees of adaptation across different blocks in the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for government intervention and improved infrastructure to enhance the adaptive capacity of the communities.
