Abstract

The article 'Evaluating Risks of Multi-unit Nuclear Sites: Insights and Considerations' delves into the critical assessment of risks associated with nuclear power plants (NPPs) that house multiple reactors. It begins by highlighting the significance of Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) in ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear projects. The article explores the evolution and application of PSA in various industries, with a particular focus on its relevance to Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). It emphasizes the need for a Multi-unit Probabilistic Safety Assessment (MUPSA) to address the unique challenges posed by multi-unit sites, including the potential for concurrent multiple plant hazards. The text discusses the advantages of MUPSA over conventional PSA methods, such as providing a more comprehensive risk profile and enhancing emergency preparedness. It also outlines the practical aspects of implementing MUPSA, including the identification and screening of accident sequences, and the importance of continuous feedback and improvement. The article concludes by stressing the need for rigorous validation and regulatory scrutiny of MUPSA models to ensure their accuracy and effectiveness in enhancing nuclear safety.
