Abstract

This chapter investigates the significant impact of curbside bus stops on traffic flow in urban environments, particularly under mixed traffic conditions. It highlights how the presence of buses at stops can create temporary bottlenecks, disrupting the flow of other vehicles and reducing road capacity. The study employs video recording techniques to capture detailed traffic data, including vehicle speeds, lateral positions, and interactions. Key findings reveal that bus stops significantly affect the lateral placement and speeds of motorized two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and cars, with reductions in average speeds ranging from 1.75 to 8.55 kmph when buses are present. The analysis also examines how bus dwell times influence vehicle behavior, showing that longer dwell times lead to increased lateral movements toward inner lanes and varied speed adjustments. The chapter concludes with recommendations for traffic management strategies, such as physical segregation of bus lanes and optimized bus stop designs, to mitigate these disruptions and enhance overall traffic efficiency.
