Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical issue of carbon emissions in the housing sector, which accounts for a significant portion of global emissions. It explores how modern methods of construction (MMC) can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by evaluating four common MMCs against a conventional brick-and-mortar house. The study uses a quasi-experimental quantitative research approach and the ISO 14040 framework to model a typical affordable house and assess its energy and carbon emissions over a 50-year lifespan. The findings reveal that MMCs can reduce carbon emissions by up to 76% during construction and 14% during operation, leading to an overall lifecycle reduction of up to 34%. The chapter also discusses the importance of sustainable design techniques and innovative technologies in further reducing carbon emissions. This comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for professionals seeking to implement sustainable and affordable housing solutions.
