Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of montmorillonite in the swelling behaviour of expansive soils, which pose significant threats to infrastructure. By employing the free swell index (FSI) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the study establishes a linear relationship between montmorillonite content and swelling behaviour. The research highlights the variability in swelling potential across different soil locations and the influence of mixed minerals, emphasizing the need for comprehensive mineralogical analysis. The findings offer valuable insights for constructing safe and durable structures on expansive soils, contributing to the broader understanding of soil-structure interaction in geotechnical engineering.
