Abstract

This study investigates the influence of recycled concrete fines (RF) on the fresh, mechanical, and durability properties of mortar, with a focus on the impact of grinding time on fineness and reactivity. The research reveals that increasing grinding time improves the fineness of RF, particularly within the first 60 minutes, enhancing workability and reducing the need for superplasticizer. The incorporation of RF leads to reductions in compressive and flexural strength, although finer RF (ground for 90 minutes) shows improved pozzolanic activity and better performance. The study also examines the chloride migration coefficients, indicating that finer RF contributes to a denser microstructure and enhanced resistance to chloride ion penetration. Environmentally, the use of RF reduces CO₂ emissions by 23% per cubic meter of mortar, with the 90-minute ground RF mixture providing the best balance between strength and environmental efficiency. The findings highlight the potential of finely ground recycled concrete fines as a sustainable alternative in cementitious materials, optimizing both mechanical properties and environmental benefits.
