Abstract

The article delves into the evaluation of carbon fixation during the carbonization of municipal solid waste, a process that could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It discusses the current state of waste management globally and the need for sustainable treatment methods. The study focuses on the carbonization process, which converts organic waste into stable char, and its potential to capture and utilize carbon. The article also explores the benefits of carbonization over incineration, including lower emissions and energy independence. Additionally, it provides a detailed analysis of the properties of char produced from municipal waste and the behaviors of biomass- and fossil-derived carbon during the carbonization process. The study highlights the potential of carbonization as a technology for reducing waste volume, recycling valuable resources, and capturing CO2 emissions. It also estimates the CO2 emissions reduction effect of replacing small-scale incineration facilities with carbonization facilities and the carbon fixation potential of implementing carbonization treatment across Japan.
