Abstract

The global surge in plastics production, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), has led to significant challenges in recycling and waste management. This chapter investigates the potential of reinforcing recycled PET (rPET) with glass fibers to enhance its mechanical properties, making it suitable for load-bearing applications. The study begins by examining the current state of plastics production and recycling, highlighting the need for sustainable solutions. It then delves into the experimental methods used to produce and test rPET composites reinforced with varying percentages of glass fibers. The results demonstrate a substantial improvement in tensile and flexural strength, with the optimal reinforcement percentage identified. The chapter also discusses the impact of glass fiber content on material viscosity and processing parameters, providing insights into the practical considerations for large-scale production. Furthermore, it compares the mechanical properties of rPET composites with those of standard materials, underscoring the potential of these composites in various engineering applications. The findings suggest that rPET reinforced with glass fibers could play a crucial role in advancing sustainable development goals, offering a durable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials.
