Abstract

This chapter evaluates the effectiveness of passive occupational exoskeletons in port operations, focusing on reducing muscle strain and perceived effort among dockworkers. The study investigates two use cases: an upper-limb exoskeleton for tasks requiring arm elevation and a lower-back exoskeleton for manual material handling. Results show significant reductions in EMG activity for key muscle groups, with the upper-limb exoskeleton reducing strain by up to 34% and the lower-back exoskeleton by up to 22%. Subjective feedback from workers indicates a notable decrease in perceived effort and high usability and acceptability scores for both devices. This research highlights the potential of exoskeletons to enhance worker well-being and productivity in demanding port operations, offering a practical solution to combat work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
