Abstract

The chapter delves into the evaluation of permanent cathode technology for copper electrowinning at the Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery, focusing on safety, efficiency, and product quality. It outlines the trial's methodology, including the use of 316L stainless-steel cathodes and Pb–6%Sb anodes, and discusses the impact of various operating conditions on current efficiency and copper quality. The trial results highlight the benefits of modernising cell-top furniture and optimising anode width, leading to improved cathode morphology and higher current efficiencies. The chapter also addresses the constraints of the existing tankhouse and the economic considerations for conversion. It concludes with the successful production of over 160 tonnes of copper, with 97% meeting RTB Grade specifications, demonstrating the viability of permanent cathode technology for enhancing copper electrowinning processes.
