Abstract

This study delves into the evaluation of alternative stones for replacing Küfeki stone in the restoration of historical buildings in Istanbul. The research focuses on the compatibility of various stones in terms of their physical, mechanical, and durability properties. Six different stone types were analyzed, including limestones and travertine, to determine their suitability as replacements for Küfeki stone. The study employed a range of tests and analyses, such as petrographic and mineralogical investigations, SEM-EDX analysis, physical and mechanical tests, and durability tests. The findings highlight the importance of selecting stones that closely match the properties of Küfeki stone to ensure the visual and structural integrity of the buildings. The study concludes that Süloğlu limestone showed the most consistent results with Küfeki stones, making it a promising candidate for replacement. Additionally, the research emphasizes the necessity of conducting comprehensive analyses and durability tests to make informed decisions in stone selection for historical building restorations.
