Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of raised pedestrian crossings (RPCs) in reducing vehicle speeds and enhancing pedestrian safety on roads with varying speeds. The research focuses on four sites with different speed limits and road characteristics, analyzing speed reduction, pedestrian behavior, and additional treatments. Key findings include significant speed reductions ranging from 11 to 22 km/h, the importance of supplementary treatments like rumble strips and traffic lights, and expert insights on the optimal use of RPCs. The study concludes that RPCs are effective in lowering vehicle speeds and improving pedestrian safety, particularly when combined with additional traffic calming measures. It provides valuable data and recommendations for traffic engineers and urban planners aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and traffic calming in various road environments.
