Abstract

This chapter delves into the history of consumer protection laws in India, tracing their evolution from ancient times to the present day. It highlights the challenges posed by the rise of e-commerce, including data privacy concerns, unfair trade practices, and jurisdictional issues. The chapter focuses on the Consumer Protection Act of 2019 and the Consumer Protection Rules of 2020, which aim to address these challenges and safeguard consumer rights in the digital age. It also provides recommendations for improving consumer protection mechanisms, emphasizing the need for updated regulations and effective enforcement. The chapter concludes by underscoring the importance of continuous legal and regulatory developments to ensure consumer safety and security in the ever-evolving landscape of e-commerce.
The chapters in this book are presented in the “International Conference on Legal and Economic Synergy for an Equitable Society, organised by the University Institute of Laws at Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana, India on February 1st, 2024”.
