Abstract

This study delves into the evolution characteristics of bedding-perpendicular joints (BPJs) in soft-hard interbedded strata, using the Ordos Basin in China as a case study. The research focuses on how interface morphology affects joint spacing and development, highlighting the significant role of interface roughness in controlling joint initiation and saturation. Through in-situ investigations, laboratory experiments, and discrete element simulations, the study reveals that interface roughness has a negative exponential relationship with joint spacing and influences the log-normal distribution of joint spacing. The findings provide a scientific basis for understanding rock mass structure and offer practical implications for engineering applications such as fluid migration prediction, slope stability assessment, and block stability analysis. The study concludes that interface morphology is a critical factor in the heterogeneous development of BPJs, with implications for the stability and strength of rock masses in similar geological settings.
