Abstract

The military invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 has had profound effects on the global air transportation system, particularly in Europe. The closure of Ukrainian airspace and the limited use of Belarusian and Russian airspaces have led to significant disruptions in air traffic flows, forcing airlines to reroute flights and increasing the index of trajectory inefficiency. This chapter delves into the economic impact of these changes, highlighting the breakdown of global food delivery chains and the damage to Ukrainian airports and navigation equipment. The analysis reveals a substantial increase in air traffic at airports in neighboring countries, with Poland and Hungary experiencing the most significant growth. The chapter also examines the horizontal flight efficiency, using the flight connection between Warsaw and Tokyo as a case study to illustrate the impact of closed airspaces on trajectory length and flight duration. The findings underscore the need for adaptive strategies in air traffic management to mitigate the effects of geopolitical conflicts on aviation.
