Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of delamination in composite aircraft structures, highlighting its potential to cause sudden structural collapse. It focuses on the compressive behavior of a typical aeronautical stiffened panel, manufactured with carbon fiber/epoxy resin. The study involves both experimental testing and numerical simulations using the SMart-time XB method based on the Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT). The results demonstrate excellent agreement between experimental and numerical data, particularly in terms of strain versus compressive load. The chapter provides valuable insights into the unstable propagation of delamination, which is crucial for the damage tolerant design philosophy in aerospace engineering. The findings have significant implications for ensuring the safety and reliability of composite aircraft structures under operational loads.
