17. Examining and Reviewing Innovation Strategies in Australian Public Sector Organisations

The chapter delves into the examination and review of innovation strategies within Australian public sector organisations, focusing on the factors that enhance or impede innovation processes. It explores the theoretical background of organisational barriers and leadership characteristics that influence innovation, with a particular emphasis on the unique challenges faced by public sector organisations. The methodology involves a qualitative data analysis of government reports and publications, revealing themes such as organisational barriers, leadership characteristics, and organisational climate. The analysis identifies specific barriers like old organisational models, lack of support and autonomy, and budget constraints, as well as favourable leadership traits such as being supportive, risk-taking, and practical. Additionally, it examines the role of organisational climate in fostering innovation, highlighting aspects like a culture of sharing, policy development, networking, and measurement tools. The chapter concludes by emphasising the importance of these factors in developing a culture of innovation within the public sector, aiming to enhance productivity and overall organisational performance.
