Examining Conflict Patterns in Hackathon Teams: A Case Study

Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of conflict within hackathon teams, focusing on a case study of a team of five undergraduate students participating in a 36-hour hackathon. The study classifies conflicts into task, process, and relational categories, and explores how these conflicts evolve over time and among different team members. Notably, the team predominantly experienced task conflicts, with leaders playing a significant role in mediating disagreements. The findings highlight the importance of understanding conflict patterns in high-stress, time-pressured environments, offering valuable insights for design teams and hackathon organizers alike.
