As part of the Green Deal, the EU has committed to establishing a hydrogen economy in Europe, with a clear focus on green hydrogen. To produce this hydrogen, large quantities of renewable electricity will be needed in the future, so much that a considerable amount of additional capacity will have to be created. In order to manufacture hydrogen cost-effectively, electrolysis plants need to be in operation for as many hours in the year as possible. For this reason, hydrogen can be produced most cheaply in countries where there is an above-average number of sunny days.
