Abstract

The article delves into the complex interplay between machining methods and material properties on the plastic deformation of wavy surfaces during contact. It employs a novel combination of experimental techniques, such as the segmentation-aided digital image correlation method, and finite element simulations to observe and analyze the evolution of plastic zones. The study highlights the significance of asperity height, distribution frequency, surface noise, and yield strength in determining the initiation and expansion of plastic deformation. The findings provide valuable insights into the mesoscopic contact behavior of surfaces, contributing to the advancement of contact mechanics and materials science.
