Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of two-phase gas–liquid slug flows in pipelines with slight direction changes, focusing on the evolution and prediction of slug flow parameters. Through a combination of experimental and numerical approaches, the study examines how slug flow characteristics such as elongated bubble velocity, unit cell frequency, and slug lengths change in response to directional changes. The experimental setup includes a horizontal pipe followed by an inclined section, with three configurations tested: two downward inclinations of −3 and −5 degrees, and a fully horizontal pipe. The numerical simulations employ a simplified two-fluid model to predict slug flow behavior and compare results with experimental data. The analysis reveals how slug flow can transition to stratified flow under certain conditions, with notable changes in flow parameters observed after directional changes. The study highlights the importance of understanding these transitions for accurate equipment design and safe transportation in the oil and gas industry.
