Abstract

The chapter delves into the experimental comparison of community face coverings, as outlined in the CWA 17553:2020 standard, with surgical masks and filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). It addresses the critical shortages of medical-grade masks during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recommendation for civilians to use community face coverings. The study compares technical performance requirements, including particle filtration efficiency (PFE), total inward leakage (TIL), and breathing resistance, across different mask types. Notably, the chapter highlights the challenges in comparing masks due to varying test standards and particle size distributions. The findings reveal that community masks, especially those with filter inserts, can meet or even exceed the performance criteria of surgical masks and FFRs in certain aspects. However, significant discrepancies in total inward leakage and breathability are also noted. The study concludes with recommendations for improving the performance of community masks and emphasizes the need for consistent and reliable testing methods.
