Abstract

This study delves into the adhesive characteristics of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) bonded to rolled steel sections, focusing on bond strength, failure modes, and the impact of surface preparation. Through a rigorous experimental evaluation, the research compares the performance of different epoxy resins and polyester resin, highlighting their mechanical properties and bond strengths. The study reveals that Araldite epoxy resin offers superior flexural strength, making it ideal for high stiffness and load-bearing applications, while Blue Fix epoxy resin excels in tensile strength, suitable for tension-dominated structures. Polyester resin, although brittle, demonstrates good ductility for energy absorption. The research also underscores the significance of surface preparation, with smoother and cleaner surfaces yielding stronger bonds. Additionally, the use of primers is shown to significantly enhance bond strength. The findings provide valuable insights for professionals seeking to optimize material selection and bonding techniques in steel structures, ultimately contributing to enhanced durability and safety in construction projects.
