Abstract

The article explores the critical importance of accurately identifying damping ratios in single-degree-of-freedom systems for controlling vibration responses. While existing methods, such as the logarithmic decrement method, are effective for lower damping ratios, they fall short for higher values. The authors introduce a curve-fitting technique based on a minimum error criterion, demonstrating its superior accuracy in estimating damping ratios greater than 0.8. This method addresses a significant gap in current identification techniques, offering a more precise and reliable solution for high damping ratios. The study also compares the new method with conventional approaches, highlighting its advantages and potential applications in various engineering fields.
