Abstract

The iron and steel industry is under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, with a focus on optimizing slag metallurgy to enhance process efficiency. This article delves into the experimental investigation of additive dissolution behavior in slags, highlighting the potential of recycled refractories as sustainable alternatives to conventional additives. Through rigorous viscosity and electrochemical measurements, the study provides valuable insights into the physical and electrochemical properties of different slag systems. The findings underscore the importance of understanding additive interactions and dissolution rates for developing digital tools to simulate and optimize metallurgical processes. The research, conducted as part of an Austrian-funded project in collaboration with industry partners, offers a promising pathway towards achieving long-term carbon neutrality in steel production. The detailed analysis of slag compositions and their behavior under various conditions makes this article a must-read for those seeking to advance sustainable practices in the industry.
