Abstract

This chapter delves into the experimental investigation of durable wood panels for the design of relocatable modular buildings, addressing the pressing issues of the housing crisis and the building industry's emissions. The study focuses on the strength and durability of a novel panelized modular wall-to-floor connection system designed for disassembly and reassembly, comparing it to a conventional light-frame wood wall system. Key topics include the experimental testing of CLT and light-frame specimens under monotonic loading conditions, the assessment of their performance, and a life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing the two systems over their intended service life. The results highlight the superior durability and reuse potential of the CLT system, making it a viable alternative for rapidly deployable housing. The chapter concludes with insights into the sustainability and circularity of the CLT system, emphasizing its potential to reduce embodied carbon emissions and contribute to a circular economy.
